Year Six

Year 6 at Sunnybank State School should develop the students productively and increase knowledge and skills in all areas of the curriculum.

"Safety" will be a major theme during the early part of the year. Students will learn about personal, family and community safety by reading, discussing, visitations and excursions. During SOSE and Integrated Studies time, Mr Michael Langlois (Queensland Police Force) and a member from Queensland Rail will talk to students about various safety areas, e.g. identifying risky situations, road safety, bicycle safety and rail safety, etc.

An excursion to Safe City will allow the students to see first hand, the workings of a Fire Station,Ambulance Centre and a Courthouse.

During Language Activities, students will read in a guided reading, shared reading or teacher reading session each day, with comprehension activities linked to these readings.

Other Language Activities, which will occur in groups, will cover the areas of Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar and Writing. The classroom is well equipped with computers anc ICT's are integrated across the key learning areas.

In Mathematics, students will use a text book, Go Maths, as the basis of their studie: however the areas of Number, Measurement, Chance and Data and Space will be explored in many interesting and challenging ways, to make the students aware that to master mathematics, many varying strategies are needed, to be used to effectively solve problems.

Art activities will include posters, leaflets and signs related to the study of "Safety". These will be displayed around the school to remind other students of the necessity to follow correct Safety Procedures.

The children will attend camp this year at Currimundi (Caloundra) to extend their physical and social skills in a beach location. It is hoped that some leadership personalities for next year's school leaders may step forward during our stay.

Year 6 student leaders attend school council meetings each week, the classroom leaders attend these meetings and have a reporting session to the class after returning. This time allows all students the opportunity to have a say about what they may like to be raised at the following meeting.
