Year Four

Year 4 comprises of 45 children in two classes. The two teachers plan cooperatively to cater for the needs, interests and abilities of the children and teach in single classes, thus enabling the teachers to put their own expression, perception and personality tot heir teaching roles.

The Year 4 classrooms are supportive and caring environments where children develop the confidence to take risks, express themselves and blossom as independent learners. A big growth is noticed in Year 4, as this is the link year between lower and upper school. This maturing is most evident in their expressive writing, style of handwriting, responsibility for their homework and the taking of ownership for the day to day learning activities that exist in the classrooms.

A lot of effort is put into the children’s enjoyment of, as well as meaningful instruction in, the traditional subject areas such as Maths and Literacy.

Topics covered in Integrated Studies are:

• Fitness and Local Facilities (tying in very well with the Commonwealth Games)
• Endangered Animals and Environments, encompassing a trip that will introduce some of Australia’s threatened species and the challenges they face in the wild
• Influence of Historic Past, involving an excursion to St Helena Island
• Forces and Energy, with an interesting trip, possibly to the Science Centre.

Year 4 children are eager to do their best work and take pride in what they have achieved. They are reminded always that they are unique and special, learning tolerance for others’ differences and an appreciation of themselves.

“ We wouldn’t have harmony if we all sang the same note.”
