Year One

In Year One our day is broken up into three blocks of learning time:

                  • Literacy - 9.00 - 11.00
                  • Numeracy 11.45 - 12.30
                  • Integrated Studies - 2.00 - 3.00

We pack a lot of work into one short day:

LITERACY

During our literacy block we use a range of apporaches to further develop the literacy skills of the children. Our program includes:

  • Jolly Phonics - a multi-sensory approach based on 5 skills:
  • 1. Learning the letter SOUND and the action that cues it.
    2. Learning the letter FORMATION.
    3. BLENDING the sounds
    4. Identifying the sounds in WRITING.
    5. Tricky words (irregular words).

  • Guided Reading - books are leveled and matched to the children's individual reading ability.
  • Shared Reading - we explore a range of books including fiction and non-fiction.
  • Writing - an important skill that lays the foundation for future learning.
  • Literacy Groups- includes a range of hands-on activities including the use of technology.

NUMERACY

This year we are using a maths program called GO MATHS as a basis for our maths learning activities. The children develop their maths skills by experiencing hands on activities that simulate real life situations. Each day, they also use the six computers in each room to tackle on-line problems and software applications that not only develop their mathematical skills but also their use of technology.

INTEGRATED STUDIES

This year our units will include:

Term 1 – Colour My World
Term 2 – Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales from Around the World
Term 3 – Amazing Animals
Term 4 – Wonderful Water

Our excursions will include a visit to "Out of the Box" in term two and a farm visit in term three.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is included in everything we do. Parents are kept informed about what is happening at school through our Year One website at:

PERCEPTUAL MOTOR PROGRAM

We run a perceptual motor program each week to further develop the gross and fine motor skills of the children. This assists them in their learning by developing the muscles in their arms and legs that they use to manipulate materials. The program includes:

  • Gross Motor Activities: manipulative, ball, movement, fitness skills
  • Fine Motor Activities: includes painting, cutting, drawing, threading, gluing etc.
