The
staff at Sunnybank State School believes that:
"Intervention
is an ongoing and integral part of teaching and occurs every time
a teacher makes an adjustment to their teaching program to enhance
a child’s learning.”
(Literacy
Intervention Guidelines)
Sunnybank
State School has a team approach to intervention. Students may be supported
by one or several teacher aides or specialists. The Support Teacher
Learning Difficulties (STLD) is part of that team.
Some of the programs that Sunnybank School runs to support students’ learning
are:
• SAR ‘Support a Reader’ (years 1,2,3)
• In class literacy and numeracy support
• Rainbow Readers (years 4,5,6)
• Communication (year 1)
• Oral language (year2)
• Individual spelling programs
• ELF Program (Early Learning Foundation)
• Writing groups
Children with learning difficulties are identified and with parental permission
are referred to the Student Welfare Committee. Children referred for Learning
Support are assessed by the STLD and a Support Plan is devised specifically
for that student in collaboration with parent/s and class teachers. This is
known as Appraisement, which is a process carried out in all Queensland Government
Schools.
